Spicy Tuna Sashimi

If you know me, you'd know that I love sushi and sashimi, but that wasn't always the case. The first time I tasted sushi was when I was seven years old. Me and my family were in New Jersey, USA at my tita's (auntie's) house and she had made these little black rolls, that when cut open, were filled with rice, raw fish and vegetables.

I was curious and so I tried one, but the taste of the nori and mix of vinegar-ed rice was very strange; plus if you consider the fact that I had jet lag, it wasn't a very good first experience.

But a lot has changed since then, I don't really remember when I started to eat sushi again with gusto, but I haven't stopped since then.

Here's a recipe of my version for spicy tuna sashimi

You will need the following ingredients:

Tuna sashimi 400g

Half a lemon

Soy sauce 4 tbsp

A few spring onions

Sesame oil 4 tbsp

Chili oil 1 tbsp (or according to your preference)

Lettuce leaves for lettuce bowl

"Cooking" Instructions:

1.) Wash and pat dry the thoroughly defrosted tuna and cut into small cubes
2.) In a bowl mix the sesame oil and chili oil and mix the lemon juice and soy sauce in another bowl
3.) Wash and slice the spring onions and arrange a washed lettuce leaf in the serving bowl
4.) First put the tuna in the bowl with the oil and mix, coating the tuna completely
5.) Pour the soy sauce and lemon juice mixture into the tuna bowl and mix through
6.) Place the tuna into the lettuce bowl and garnish with the spring onion and a lemon slice
7.) EAT! =)

After I took this picture I added cucumber on the side

Notes:

  • I recommend that if you bought your fish fresh, to wash with running cold water, pat the fish dry and the store in a zip lock bag and put it in the Freezer at -20 degrees C for 24 hrs before use. This is the European Union recommendation to kill off all parasites before consumption, is a a must practise for safely eating sashimi and sushi.
  • The reason why I put the oil first, is to prevent the fish from oxidising and so that the lemon juice won't cook the fish like cerviche.

Happy eating! <3

Interest in Pinterest

This year I recently started using Pinterest, and I absolutely adore it. The concept is simple and easy to use. Just imagine having this limitless cork board filled with all the things that inspire you or you find amazing, without having to sacrifice your wall space. You get to share people's images that link to their blog and sites that it came from, in a way it's like advertising shared interests.

How many of you search for blogs on cooking, fashion, or beauty and go through numerous sites that don't show you specifically what you want there and then? I personally find it easier to use pinterest to find things that interest me and go to the website that links to the image, we are after all visual beings and what ever catches our eye can certainly make us curious.

My personal favorite pins are the step by step ones or the DIY posts.

Sometimes I just like looking at them, even if i'm not going to do it, I just might, some day.

Till next time =)

Starting a blog

I never thought that I'd make a blog, because I didn't think that I had much to say or share. When you see other people's blogs, you'd see how interesting and relate-able they are. I stating using the internet when i was eleven, not at home but at the school library. There was no Facebook then, and since I am Filipino, the first social networking site I joined was Asian Avenue.

After that I joined friendster when I was in high school in the Philippines. Back then friendster was all about "testimonials" and was still a social network site. In that period I joined many other social networking sites such as myspace, tagged, hi5, etc., but I never thought of starting a blog. My sister did at one point have a blog, but then again she was use to that sort of stuff because ever since she was young, she always kept a diary or journal. I, on the other hand, am crap at keeping a diary, I always end up writing " ...sorry diary for not writing to you in a long time..." or "...sorry it's been so long since my last entry...".

Maybe it was because:
                                   1. I was to lazy to write anything
                                   2. I had no time to write
                                   3. I didn't know what to write

But since my teenage years, I am on facebook, I create sets on Polyvore and I pin on Pinterest... There is so much stuff to do to stay connected to people, that's how great technology is, how can I not take advantage of it. I can't join every single site, but I should widen my horizon a bit, I just might have something interesting to share.

Can you find the facebook logo?
